Jim Carter, an influential figure in Tennessee high school athletics, has been recognized by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) as the recipient of the 2023-24 Distinguished Service Award. This accolade comes as a testament to Carter’s enduring commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering success both on and off the field.
Born into a family deeply rooted in athletics, Carter was destined for a life intertwined with sports. His father, Ronnie Carter, a National High School Hall of Fame inductee and former TSSAA Executive Director, alongside his mother, Caroline, and numerous coaches, played pivotal roles in shaping Jim’s future. Today, Carter serves as the athletics director and baseball coach at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, Tennessee.
Carter’s coaching tenure spans over 25 years, during which he has profoundly impacted the lives of countless students while achieving remarkable success in high school baseball. His coaching journey includes significant stints at Jackson Christian School, Hunters Lane, Davidson Academy, and Mt. Juliet High School, culminating in his current role at Goodpasture Christian School since 2014.
Under his leadership, Carter’s teams have amassed over 665 wins, with four of his programs reaching the TSSAA State Tournament in three different classifications. His most notable accomplishment came in 2022 when he led Goodpasture’s baseball team to a Division II-A state title. Carter’s exceptional coaching prowess has earned him recognition as the Volunteer State’s top baseball coach by both the TSAAA and the National Federation of High Schools.
Reflecting on his career, Carter shares that his journey was fundamentally driven by a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of young individuals. He credits his college baseball coaches, Bubba Cates and Chuck Box, for inspiring him to embrace coaching as a calling.
